La Sal 2002

SUCCESSFUL RUTA DE LA SAL DESPITE STORMY WEATHER
Overall winners of the XVth Ruta de la Sal were 'Mare Nostrum Resort', competing
on the North Version and 'Brujo', competing on the East Version.
After two days of delay due to stormy weather all along the mediterranean coast,
on Saturday 30th of March some 200 yachts set out from the Royal Nautical Club in
Barcelona and the Nautical Club in Dénia, heading for Ibiza. The XVth edition
of the Ruta de la Sal will be remembered by all participants for the anxious
wait prior to the start, for the new record set by 'Espaciopyme.com' on the
North Version and certainly for the spectacular sailing action.
On Saturday 9am 103 yachts set out from the Royal Nautical Club in Barcelona to
cover the distance of 159 nautical miles all the way to Ibiza. By then the start
had been postponed three times already, the original start was supposed to take
place on Thursday 12 o'clock. A new departure time was set for 7pm same day, but
heave storm warnings obliged the regatta's committee to postpone the start until
Friday 12 o'clock. At the skipper's reunion, after listening to Mr. Antonio
Benedito, Barcelona's harbour master, declaring the harbour temporarily
closed, it was decided to shift the start to, hopefully, Saturday morning 9am.
Finally, on Saturday morning the yachts left the harbour to prepare for the
starting signal out at open sea, set for 9am.
Santiago Twose Barnosell, Nautical Club Arenys de Mar, with his Sun Fast 40 MARE NOSTRUM RESORTcame first in compensated time on the North Version of this years XVth edition of the
Ruta de la Sal. Winner in real time, setting a new record at 18h 40min, was
Josep Cercós, RCM Barcelona, with his ESPACIOPYME.COM, a Fusion 62, beating the
old record of 26h and 24 min from 1998, held by Juan Entrecanales with his yacht
ALMUNDARVI, a Frers 82. Second came Miguel Nigorra, Nautical Club Sta.Ponsa,
with his El Rocío II, a Toni Castro 84, after loosing the fierce battle with the
yacht from Barcelona.
The first yachts on the North Version arrived at Ibiza
during the early hours of Sunday morning (3am-5am) after a speedy regatta with
constant eastern, north-eastern and northern winds of 18 to 25 knots enabling
the yachts to keep their spinnakers up from start to finish. A truly colourful
crossing of the finishing line. Although the time limit was reduced to 38 hours,
it only affected one of the 71 yachts arriving at Ibiza. The first four yachts,
in compensated time, Santiago Twose Barnosell's Mare Nostrum Resort Sun Fast
40, Lluis Corbella's Escil.la Sun Legend 41 (RCM Barcelona), Damià Verdera's
Julia Helium 9,80 (CN Ibiza) and Pedro Egea's Yate Center J105 (CM Port
Ginesta) crossed from Barcelona to Ibiza in less than 23 hours with an average
speed of over 7 knots. Even the Fortuna 9s (9 meters l.o.a.) made the traverse
in an amazing 24 hours, averaging 6,8 knots.
72 yachts on the east version set sail leaving the nautical club at Denia on
Saturday 30th March at 12.20pm. Due to heavy storms the take off for the East
Version had been postponed as well. Originally the regatta was to start on
Thursday 28th March at 4pm, but for safety reasons the committee of the regatta
decided against it. With winds blowing at 40-55 knots Denia harbour closed
completely on Friday. Eventually the regatta took off Saturday on a slightly
altered route: Denia to Ibiza town, keeping Formentera on port side, leaving out
Tagomago reducing the minimum distance to 100 nautical miles approximately.
Alberto de Castro, Nautical Club Valencia, with his BRUJO, a First 47.7, came
first in compensated time on this year's East Version. Pierre Louis Grobety,
Nautical Club Denia, with his prototype BAMBOU YACHTING, arrived first after 11 h
20 min real time crossing.
The weather conditions on the eastern route were very
similar to those on the northern route: constant north to north-eastern winds of
20 knots. Between 11pm and midnight Saturday the first yachts started arriving
at Ibiza.
The first four yachts in compensated time to arrive were: Alberto de
Castro (RCN de Valencia) with BRUJO, a First 47.7; Dominique Luna (CN Denia),
with Hiva, a Dehler 39; Gabriel Ramón Gorlero (RCN Palma) with Bianca Aphrodite
101 and Luís A.Matas (CN Ibiza) with Alba Suspens. All four yachts arrived in
less than 14 hours with an average speed of 6,5 knots.
Despite the bad weather and the long wait all participating crews showed true
sportsmanship, high motivation and great support for the Ruta de la Sal. The
Village 'La Sal' with food, entertainment and information awaited all
participants at the Ibiza Nueva yacht club. The traditional celebration-dinner
and presentation ceremony was held on Sunday at Ibiza's trade center.
